“I know I’ve made a difference when I leave at the end of the day,” says Wellness Leader

“I know I’ve made a difference when I leave at the end of the day,” says Wellness Leader

Susie Brebner loves looking after people and she keeps busy by juggling her Wellness Leader role at Arvida Ocean Shores community with a casual St John EMT position.

Working within a large community of residents living independently, Susie is one of ten clinical staff who support residents with medication administration and emergencies if call buttons are pushed.

“Being available and being there for residents and their families is really important. We can be there faster with support if needed."

The team hold a daily clinic that acts as a ‘drop in’ for residents who may want their blood pressure checked or wounds examined.

Susie keeps a work/life balance for herself as an avid gym goer who likes regular pilates, yoga, and strength classes. Kiwi raised, Tauranga has been Susie's home for the past 22 years and she says both her ambulance and Wellness Leader roles do require crossover skills.

“All of our team are first aid trained and just like in the ambulance service, you do need empathy and to show initiative when working with older people. You might be going to emergencies in both roles so calm is needed and the ability to make decisions quickly and support residents and their families.”

After four years at Arvida Ocean Shores, Susie finds motivation in helping residents stay as independent and mobile for as long as possible.

“What drives me is that I know I’ve made a difference when I leave at the end of the day."

Arvida Ocean Shores has a small selection of homes available now. Contact the team for more information.
