Pen pals reunited after 53 years

For more than 53 years, Margaret Brake wondered what had become of her pen pal, Cathy Harm Nam.
As young women, the pair exchanged letters, photos and stories between New Zealand and Fiji before losing touch. Now, thanks to an unexpected chain of events that began at Arvida Parklane retirement community in Forrest Hill in Auckland, they have been reunited.
In the days before email and social media, Margaret and Cathy built a lasting friendship through a pen pal network with handwritten letters, sharing family news, everyday experiences and treasured memories across the Pacific.
Over time, those letters stopped. Careers, families and changing circumstances took over, and the connection faded.
"We got busy with our lives, until we somehow lost touch," Margaret recalled.
Although the years passed, Cathy never completely gave up hope of finding her friend again. After moving from Suva to Auckland, she made several attempts to track Margaret down, without success.
The breakthrough came when members of the Auckland Garden Club visited Arvida Parklane community to view the villa gardens. One of the visitors happened to know Cathy, and after a photo was shared and connections were made, Margaret's contact details eventually found their way to her long-lost friend.
"It was our village that sort of brought us together," Margaret said.
The pair's first conversation was a lengthy phone call, lasting more than an hour as they began filling in the gaps left by more than half a century apart. Soon after, Cathy visited Arvida Parklane while her daughter was in Auckland, and the two finally met face-to-face again.
Over lunch in the village café, the friends spent more than three hours talking, sharing photographs and catching up on a lifetime of experiences. From families and careers to memories of Fiji and New Zealand, there was plenty to discuss.
"It was very exciting," Cathy said. "I never expected it to happen, but amazingly it did."
