Hanging up the mic, but not the music
After 25 years on community radio and more than 700 programmes, Arvida Olive Tree resident Ray Woodley has signed off from the airwaves at the remarkable age of 93.
Ray recently recorded the final episode of Musical Confection, a programme he has hosted since 2011 on Manawatū People's Radio (Access Radio). Known for his love of big band classics and jazz standards, Ray only began broadcasting after retiring from his career as a builder, but quickly became a much-loved voice in the community.
Over the years, Ray's listeners have followed his passion for music, his stories and his encyclopaedic knowledge of songs from another era. Alongside his radio work, he has been a familiar figure in the Manawatū music scene as a pianist, banjo player and band manager.
Manawatū People's Radio content coordinator Hugh Dingwall says Ray will be greatly missed. Living at Olive Tree has given him a special connection with his audience, with fellow residents often stopping by to share how much they enjoyed his latest show.
While Ray may have retired from broadcasting, music remains a big part of his life. He plans to spend more time enjoying lunches with friends and playing piano at Olive Tree community.
