Cold weather and hot catches aboard the Alma G

Cold weather and hot catches aboard the Alma G

While the temperatures have dropped in Kerikeri, there’s been no slowing down for residents keen to get out on the water aboard the beautifully restored Alma G.

In fact, if anything, the colder months have only strengthened the appeal for everyone. Wrapped up in warm layers and with flasks of hot drinks at the ready, regular fishing trips continue to head out, offering a change of pace and sense of adventure that doesn’t depend on the season. For the residents of Te Puna Waiora retirement community onboard, it’s not just about the weather - it’s about the experience. And importantly, the fish haven’t disappeared.

The cooler months deliver plenty of excitement, with eager fishers proving that patience and a good spot can still pay off. Resident Dave Barden knows that feeling well after reeling in an impressive snapper haul recently. “They gave me a proper run for my money,” Dave says with a grin. “You forget about the cold pretty quickly when you’ve got a large snapper like that on the line. It keeps you on your toes and it’s a great feeling when you finally bring it in.”

Exclusive to the residents of Te Puna Waiora, the Alma G has become much more than a 100-year-old restored vessel - it offers a sense of freedom and connection. For some, it’s about rekindling a lifelong love of fishing. For others, it’s the chance to get out on the water once again, supported by the camaraderie of the group. Either way, there’s a strong sense of belonging that comes with stepping aboard.

Skippered by an Arvida team member, the Alma G is also used for trips sightseeing, and trips to the beautiful Bay of Islands. As the seasons continue to change, one thing remains constant.. the Alma G will keep heading out for the residents to live life their way and cast a line or two.
