Improving health with regular Tai Chi

Tapping into a meditative state of mind with slow movements and controlled breathing comes naturally for the Tai Chi group members at Arvida Parklane retirement community in Auckland.

The group meets regularly to practise the ancient art of Tai Chi - a Chinese martial art that’s celebrated for its graceful movements, meditative focus, and health benefits. Chris Wargent is one of three residents in the Tai Chi group and she firmly believes in the health benefits that come from the exercise.

“It really can improve balance and flexibility, as well as reduce stress and anxiety. I think it’s a beautiful exercise for everyone,” says Chris.

The group offers a supportive environment where friendships flourish too, and members motivate one another to embrace a healthy, active lifestyle. They recently made an appearance at the Age Friendly Auckland Symposium where they collaborated with other Tai Chi groups from the North Shore. The group led a demonstration on 10 introductory hand exercises, the eight Brocades exercise, and the dynamic 10-Step Taijiquan for health, effectively showcasing the versatility and accessibility of Tai Chi for people of all ages.

Through their ongoing commitment of the ancient art of Tai Chi, the group continues to demonstrate that age is no barrier to health, happiness, and meaningful connection.

From Tai Chi to pickleball, clay pottery and e-biking to art classes, there’s a range of resident-led activities and interests happening in Arvida communities.
