Staying active, hydrated, and connected during the holidays

Wellness Leader has some handy tips for residents over the holidays.

Arvida Peninsula Club Wellness Leader, Helena Cameron’s advice for older people over the holidays is simple: keep in contact with neighbours and friends, be sun smart, and don’t forget to stay hydrated during the long summer days.

Helena spends her days connecting with residents of the Stanmore Bay retirement community. “They like to pop in regularly and it’s more about listening to residents and being there for them,” she says.

From blood pressure checks to basic first aid, Helena’s role supports the 150 residents to continue to live independently. Her support can also extend to things like making a call to the GP for an appointment time if the resident is hard of hearing or has low vision.

Helena encourages everyone to stay active through the holidays with activities such as bowls, strength and balance classes, and daily walks – but does recommend avoiding the hottest parts of the day. “Spending just 15 minutes outdoors each day can lift your mood, boost energy, and enhance overall wellbeing,” she explains.

After 16 years at Arvida Peninsula Club community in Auckland – starting out as the village emergency overnight responder - Helena credits the vibrant community for her continued passion for the Wellness Leader role. “The residents truly brighten my day,” she shares. “They are my people.”
